The Prince George Therapeutic Riding Association provides an opportunity for children and youth with disabilities from the Prince George area to learn how to ride horses in a safe environment, while promoting improved physical and mental health.
Founded in 1992 by a group of families, we started with 5 children and an enthusiastic group of volunteers, we have grown to where we now have 40 riders with a wide range of disabilities. Our season runs from April through to October at the Agri-plex at the Exhibition Grounds, winding up with a fun horse show where each rider gets to show off the skills they have acquired. We also provide information and support to groups in other communities across the North wanting to start their own programs.
We are affiliated with the Canadian Association of Therapeutic Riding, which provides us with training and support. We currently have forty volunteers that support our association. These volunteers work directly with our riders and also help with the horses in preparation for the riding sessions. We do have 1.5 FTE employees. This is made up of our instructor, horse-care individual, and the co-ordinator for our volunteers.
We need eight to ten horses per year to run our program and as you can guess this is the most expensive part of our program.
